Division of Animal Industry
The
Division of Animal Industry's role is the diagnosis and eradication of quarantinable animal diseases in cooperation with federal agencies, private
veterinarians and livestock owners.
It is
our MISSION to detect zoonotic and other animal diseases and respond with
programs, guidelines, and regulations to protect and enhance the health
of the public and livestock.
We strive
to accomplish this through a variety of programs, import regulations, laboratory
testing, quarantines, food safety, education, and out reach programs.
Import Regulations
Health
certificates and permit requirements allow us to keep Nevada free from
brucellosis,
tuberculosis, "mad cow disease", equine
infectious anemia, pseudorabies and other important
diseases that affect humans and animals alike. Dr. David Thain, State
Veterinarian ext. 261
For pre-entry animal
health permits contact Jean Osborne ext. 230
Animal Disease
Laboratories
Nevada
has two Animal Disease Laboratories. One is
located in Reno and Dr.
Anette Rink, ext. 232 is supervisor. Also on staff are Gretchen
Cooper, MEd, M.T. (ASCP), ext.
234, and Yvonne
Kirsten, Management Assistant, ext. 231. The other
laboratory is located in Elko where Dr. Bruce Branscomb is the senior veterinary
diagnostician. The labs perform 'Official Testing" as prescribed
by federal and state statute. This includes testing for diseases
like brucellosis in cattle and sheep, pseudorabies
in pigs, and equine infectious anemia in horses (the
"Coggins Test"). Other important activities include monitoring
for scrapie in sheep, BSE (mad cow disease)
in cattle, generic e-coli testing of carcasses at slaughter
plants, detection and identification of both internal and external parasites
of animals, microbiology testing, and testing for RABIES in
cats, dogs, bats and other animals. Laboratory personnel are an excellent
source of information for disease detection and management. Private
veterinarians and the public are encouraged to contact either lab for information
and help.
