Noxious Weed Control Activites

2001

The following represents some of the weed control activities which took place around the state in 2001.  The reported activities are not all-inclusive and do not represent all noxious weed control efforts, but only those reported to the NWAC.  We want to showcase your efforts.  Please submit a report of your noxious weed control efforts so that we can include it here.

CARSON CITY

BLM treated 1022 acres (Canada thistle, Scotch thistle, russian knapweed, tamarisk)

CLARK COUNTY

Populations of tall whitetop along the Vegas Wash are being treated by Clark County Vector Control.

BLM treated 370 acres of tamarisk.

ELKO COUNTY

The Elko County Noxious Weed Control County Program treated a total of 3,885 acres of weeds (broken down as follows by Conservation Districts:

LANDER COUNTY/EUREKA/NYE

BLM treated 9885 ac (Musk/scotch thistle, hoary cress, tall whitetop, russian knapweed, tamarisk).  See the Lander County Conservation District Weed Control Demonstration Project page for more...

LINCOLN COUNTY

(submitted by Jarrod Edmunds, NRCS)

The Lincoln County CRM Steering Committee completed their charter of the Weeds TRT. This committee was instrumental in local involvement and formation of the Tri-County Weed Management District. The Lincoln County Conservation District co-signed the MOU establishing the group.

The BLM has been conducting inventories in the Meadow Valley drainage this summer and have completed approximately 60% of the area. This information has been added to the BLM data base and will be transmitted to NRCS for the state map.

Spot treatment of tall whitetop has been occurring on public lands and on private land. Three new patches of tall whitetop have been located and submitted to NRCS.

The Lincoln County Conservation District is pursuing ideas for using state weed management grant monies for assisting land owners with the cost of purchasing chemicals. This is just being looked into and needs to be coordinated and researched as to how to do it, who would be eligible and what the liabilities will be.

LYON COUNTY

(submitted by Ed Biggs)

The Yerington NRCS field office has 1 EQIP contract in the Walker River Paiute GPA which addresses the control of tall whitetop and hoary cress. We have 2 EQUIP contracts in the Walker River GPA which address the control of tall whitetop and 1 contract which deals with thistle control. There is 1 EQUIP contract in the Lyon County portion of the Carson River GA which includes tall whitetop control.

The Mason Valley Conservation District treated about 25 acres of tamarisk along the Walker River since last year. They are using the 'cut stump' method of treatment with Garlon 4. They have treated tamarisk during both the dormant season and growing season and have experienced 100% kill.

The Smith Valley Conservation District sprayed tall whitetop along the Walker River corridor during the past 2 growing seasons. About 120 acres were treated with Escort last year with about a 90% rate of kill.  About 160 acres were treated mostly with 2, 4-D amine this season (some Escort was also used). In addition to tall whitetop, some canada thistle and Russian knapweed was also treated by the Smith Valley Conservation district. Curtail was applied to knapweed in mid summer.  The district plans to spray tall whitetop next year using Escort.

The Dayton Valley Conservation District sprayed tall whitetop along the Carson River corridor with 2, 4-D amine this year. The Dayton Valley Conservation District is in the process of trying to establish a weed control district in the Dayton area. They are working with the Lyon County Vector control program on this item.

In addition to weed control programs that NRCS is involved with, Lyon County has a weed district which serves Smith and Mason Valley. the weed district is very active in the control of noxious and invasive weeds, especially tall whitetop, puncture vine, knapweed and some yellow starthistle. The weed district is very responsive to requests from local citizens and has coordinated its whitetop spraying activities with Smith Valley Conservation District spraying efforts.

The Walker River Paiute Tribe (LYON and MINERAL COUNTIES) has been aggressively spraying tall whitetop for the past 2 seasons along roads and ditches on the Reservation. They are also spraying russian knapweed this season and are cooperating with the USDA/NDOA tamarisk biocontrol project.

NYE COUNTY

The Nye County Weed Control Partnership was very active this year and took on roadside spraying of hoary cress in the Monitor Valley area.  About six miles of roadsides were treated with Escort. Ken Thompson with the Tonopah CD mapped the weed location with the Tonopah Conservation District GPS unit and was able to produce maps with his own software program. The weed partnership also retreated two major russian knapweed sites in lower Smoky Valley (about 2 acres). We are getting over an 80% kill on spray sites of knapweed. The majority of this weed spraying was accomplished with volunteer help from the Tonopah CD supervisors.

There are four EQIP contracts with noxious weed control of russian knapweed. These four contracts contain about 200 acres. Approximately 150 acres were treated this year.  We have located several new infestations of knapweed (over 50 acres) and plan treatment for next year.

STOREY COUNTY

Dean Haymore was designated at the county weed contact for Storey County and he is currently working on a weed plan for the county. Storey County and the Dayton Valley CD will be partnering on control of tall whitetop in Six-mile Canyon.

Spotted knapweed (less than one acre) was found behind the Virginia Highlands on rangeland and immediately treated by NDOA.

WHITE PINE COUNTY

4382 acres treated (Musk/Canada/ and Scotch thistle, tamarisk, diffuse/spotted/and russian knapweed, dalmatian toadflax, tall whitetop, leafy spurge)

2002

STATE OF NEVADA

The following are the recipients of the Weed Control Grant from the Department of Agriculture. There were over $171,000 in grant requests and we had $25,000 to award, not an easy decision as all the grants were well written and deserving of funding.

Nevada Department of Agriculture - Weed Eradication Projects

Dayton Valley Conservation District – noxious weed control associated with irrigation delivery systems for 8 ranches and 3 drainage areas onto agricultural land.

Jiggs Conservation District – purchasing chemicals for various areas of noxious weed infestations.

Smith Valley Conservation District – tall whitetop control on the West Walker River watershed.

Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California – purchasing chemicals for 1735 acres of crop and improved Tribal range and dry pasture.
